Warcraft Less Traveled #80 – The Secret Aerie

Posted in Podcast Episodes on March 5th, 2014 by Skolnick

Episode #80: Nested high in one of the isolated mountain regions of Pandaria, explorers can discover a noteworthy subzone called The Secret Aerie. Although accessible with a flying mount, game designers created a way for lost adventurers to make the beautiful journey into this hidden area entirely by foot. The Secret Aerie is home to various Pandaran Hawktrainer NPCs, each titled as ‘People of the Sky’. Various named NPCs have appeared in recent patches, however no known quests of achievements are associated with them. All hunters should take note of the lesser known, tamable Training Hawk (birds of prey) that are being trained by the People of the Sky. A highlight for explorers to this region is the interaction with Hawkmaster Liu, an interesting NPC who has unique voice acting & will respond to characters differently based on their questing experience with the Shado-Pan in Townlong.

Posted in Podcast Episodes on June 28th, 2012 by Skolnick

Warcraft Less Traveled #68 – Gillijim’s Isle of the South Seas

Posted in Podcast Episodes on May 15th, 2012 by Skolnick

Episode #68: Gillijim’s Isle was an original subzone that existed during the alpha-testing of WoW. Along with the Island of Doctor Lapidis, this small tropical island was never officially released into Azeroth. Although the island’s name may have been a playful reference to the popular tv show called Gilligan’s Island, the Blizzard developers may have initially planned this Gillijim Isle to be the starting zone for the Troll race. All reference to this forgotten island was removed with patch 4.0.1a, yet until that time, it was possible to travel to the open-water location and see the island’s subzone title appear.

Posted in Podcast Episodes on December 13th, 2011 by Skolnick

Episode #61 Timecapsule: A pair of solitary destinations can be easily overlooked in the beautiful zone of Nagrand. High up on one of its floating islands, a lone apple tree and skeleton are often considered a “Blizzard tribute” to Sir Isaac Newton. Requiring a flying mount (found southwest of the Throne of Elements), the Newton Apple Tree was one of the last-discovered secret places in all of the Outlands. The Nagrand Tomb is a second scene that fills the WoW explorer with a sense of wonder. This tranquil location has no known backstory in the existing Warcraft lore, yet its remote location in the far western mountains will reward the visitor with a stunning view.

Warcraft Less Traveled #57 – Lake Dumont

Posted in Podcast Episodes on October 4th, 2011 by Skolnick

Episode #57 Timecapsule: Lake Dumont is a secret subzone hidden in the mountains of northern Feralas. Appearing only after the Cataclysm, explorers of this area will need a flying mount to get over the high mountain ridge to reach this valley. In the center of Lake Dumont, an unnamed island is found. A few of the mysterious features on the island include the burning ruins of a mage’s watchtower, a number of Feralas-style trees, a small hut, and a special grave marked with ‘IVAN’. The truly interesting part of Lake Dumont island are its NPC inhabitants. Twelve level 85 NPCs are seen on this island, each busy in activity. It appears that the NPCs are named after real-life employees of Blizzard games. For example, NPC draenei Jake Patton, works as a Blizzard editor; while Lich King production assistant Larissa Bussell is found here as a NPC worgen. Lake Dumont is another well crafted location that makes great use of the lonely areas between the various Azeroth zones.

Warcraft Less Traveled #52 – Whispering Forest’s Faerie Dragon Song

Posted in Podcast Episodes on July 12th, 2011 by Skolnick

Episode #52 Timecapsule: The subzone of Whispering Forest, in the Tirisfal Glades zone, holds a mysterious destination and in-game event. A strange ring of glowing mushrooms can be found on the forest floor at coordinates @(17,68). At this location, seven Fey-Drunk Darters (Faerie Dragons) occasionally appear outside the ring of mushrooms. Patient explorers are given a special surprise event by the Faerie Dragons if they watch long enough. Approximately every 6 hours, the Fey Darter Dragons face into the center of the mushroom ring and begin projecting a magical golden light of magic (or song) into the center. In the center of the mushroom ring, an NPC appears called the Faerie Circle. The in-game music changes to a unique song that is heard nowhere else in Azeroth. As the music plays, golden musical ‘notes’ appear over the heads of each of the Faerie Dragons… almost as if the Faerie Dragons were singing the song. The special Faerie event here ends in 3 minutes time – the Faerie Circle disappears, the Fey-Drunk Darters vanish, and the music fades away. At the time of this recording, there is no known reason or in-game lore tie to explain this amazing event.
